Buildspan Geocell

Buildspan Geocell is a lightweight, flexible, three-dimensional cellular confinement system made from expandable panels of ultrasonically bonded polymer strips. Together, these strips form a highly durable cellular structure that delivers exceptional strength and stability for ground reinforcement applications.

Once filled with compacted soil, the Cellular Confinement System (CCS) creates a composite layer with enhanced mechanical and geotechnical performance. As loads are applied to the infill, lateral stresses develop along the cell walls. At the same time, the three-dimensional structure confines the soil and significantly reduces lateral particle movement. In addition, vertical loading increases friction between the cell walls and the infill, which improves load distribution and overall structural resistance.

Furthermore, adjacent confined cells work together to provide additional support through passive load transfer. The high-strength cellular network restricts horizontal expansion, helping the system maintain compaction while delivering long-term reinforcement performance.

During installation, contractors connect the geocell sections and place them directly onto the prepared subgrade or over a geotextile-covered roadbed. The panels are then expanded into position using stretching equipment. Depending on the project size, large installation areas may include hundreds of interconnected cells. Once fully expanded, installers fill the cells with suitable materials such as soil, sand, aggregate, or recycled fill. Finally, they compact the material using vibratory equipment to achieve the required performance.

As a result, the CCS forms a load-distributing mattress that spreads applied loads across a wider area. This process helps reduce settlement in soft soils, improve shear strength and load-bearing capacity, and minimise surface deformation.
